My Ironman Prayer

On Sunday, August 7, I'll attempt my second Ironman Race in Boulder, CO. 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run.

…the Hopis consider running a form of prayer; they offer every step as a sacrifice to a loved one, and in return ask the Great Spirit to match their strength with some of his own. ~Christopher McDougall, Born to Run

Within prayer you simply receive and return God’s gaze of love. ~Richard Rohr

My Ironman Prayer

Great Spirit, my desire is that today be one of gratitude and remembering your love and the love of others. Grow me body, heart and soul into the human animal you designed.

May each swim rotation be a baptism, sloughing off the old and allowing the me you created to emerge more fully. May the bike fill my soul with a spirit of adventure and exploration. May the run be a joining of community. Grant us, athlete and spectator, the experience of knowing each other in our suffering and encouragement.

God, may our different bodies draw us together. Whether male or female, lean or not so lean, sighted or not sighted, fully limbed or not, connect our hearts as one racer.

Guide me to learn from those whose spirit is strong but whose body needs another to pull and push it through the race. From those pulled and pushed help me to learn humility, joy and courage. From those pulling and pushing give me a greater understanding of sacrifice, strength and courage. Show me your ways in their dance.

I dedicate this race to my much too early deceased brother, Bret Wilson. Grant me perseverance, remembering his face and laugh, when the whispers hiss that I should quit.

In the end, no matter the result, bring together athletes and supporters as one racer, to celebrate you returning your gaze of love.
