24/444 Healing from Infidelity: Enlarging Our Souls
2011.09.29
Ann: As our veils came off, we had much pain to experience, but as we dealt with the pain, our souls were enlarged. Enlarging our souls is a term we borrow from Gerald Sittser in A Grace Disguised and from Augustine about 1700 years ago. Augustine had a wild life early on and a deep relationship with God later in life. As well as he knew God, he was still completely overwhelmed by the idea of God really loving him.
He said, "My soul is like a house, small for you to enter, but I pray you to enlarge it. It is in ruins, but I ask you to remake it. It contains much that you will not be pleased to see: this I know and do not hide."
An enlarged soul not only increases its capacity for anger, sorrow, despair and anguish, but it is also capable of experiencing greater joy, strength, peace and love.
God make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. ~Psalm 51:10
