John at Skywalking linked to John Okeefe at ginkworld; inside the mind of punk monkey...I am not exactly sure either. BUT, his post Superman vs Spiderman has some good points to consider.
He primarily is talking about Christian leaders, but the premise is also valid for what sets up men and women for affairs. Putting on a face of 'having it together' and not having some trusted friends to talk about where you don't have it all together is a recipe for acting out sexually through pornography or an affair. We all have our hurts and struggles, but if we deny they exist out of a false view that Christians shouldn't struggle, we set ourselves up to relieve the pain and pressure through means that go against our stated values.
He compares the perfection of Superman to the human realness of Spiderman. Not having it all together is evidence we need a savior not evidence that we need to work harder to eliminate imperfection.
I agree with Gink about his assessment of Spiderman and feel these words are good for anyone and not just pastors.
*looking like a normal person. postmodern pastors are not a pretty lot - we look like the people we serve.
*we have life issues - we all make mistakes, the secret is can we all learn from those mistakes and move on in christ?
*not the best - I know of one postmodern pastor who is very shy - very shy, and dealing with it everyday.
*lived life - people live in pain, and they are looking for people who understand that pain, and know of ways through the pain.
Take off your masks and get honest with your spouse. You really don't have anything to lose...but the pressure of that botox smile.
